2012 Boot Camp Challenge
On September 29, 2012, Susan Mejia and her family participated in the Boot Camp Challenge at MCRD San Diego. Their team name was the "Semper Gumbies."
Sue, her husband Art, and her son, Dominic, were joined by Art's sister, Veronica, and her husband, John, as they competed to honor Sue and Art's older son, Justin, a Marine who went through boot camp in San Diego. Their goal was to raise $1,250 for Operation Prayers and Letters™, which sent hand-written cards and letters to wounded and injuredtroops across the country. Sue's Marine, Justin, had graduated in January of that year, and, according to Sue, her family "...wanted [to compete in] a challenge [consisting of more] than just running!"
Sue and her family became Marine Parents supporters when they heard about our organization from her son's Staff Sergeant at the recruiting office and they learned about Team Marine Parents™ from the Operation Prayers and Letters™ website. "I saw injured Marines taking part in these events," Sue said, "and felt we needed to give back to them and [participate in] the Boot Camp Challenge...For my Son's graduation, there were 15 of us. We stayed five days, and it was one of [my] proudest moments as a parent. I hope all Marine parents have that same experience because it is so worth all the sacrifices that you have to make as a Marine family! We are very proud to be a Marine family and [compete in the] MCRD Boot Camp challenge for Operation Prayers and Letters™."
