I always considered myself active – I took karate, did aerobics, etc. – but never really liked to run. My knees hurt, my back hurt, my feet hurt. You get the picture. Somewhere in our 40s, my husband started running. Then, my oldest daughter started high school and joined the track team. I watched them. I cheered them on. And at some point, I started to feel left out. So one day my husband went to run at the track, and I figured I’d join him. I’d run what I could, walk what I could and see how it played out. I graduated to the street. I ran my first 5K. My friends convinced – mid-race – I could run a 10K, and I did.
Then in October 2013, my knee gave out and I had arthroscopic surgery. Suddenly, I missed running. Once I was cleared to put my running shoes back on, I dove in with a vengeance. I ran my first half marathon in September 2014. Then I needed another goal: a marathon. Before turning 50.
My daughter was then in school at Northwestern (Go ‘Cats!). She challenged me to run the Chicago Marathon with her before she graduated. So, last October, I did just that. Met my goal with two years to spare! (She of course ended up studying abroad for the quarter and didn’t run the Chicago Marathon with me). It was both easier and harder than I imagined.
So what comes next? Watching the Boston Marathon this year, I realized I needed another marathon. Far from becoming a “one and done” bucket list item, I’m hooked. I have no familial connection to the Marines, but I have two dear friends whose sons have served. I've felt my heart tighten when hearing about missions, I've seen the angst in their faces when hearing news of danger zones. If their sons can put their lives on the line every minute of every day, I can train and run for a few hours.
