42nd Marine Corps Marathon
Date: October 22, 2017
Location: Washington DC
My son left for boot camp September 19th, 2016 and finally graduated on May 26th, 2017 after 8 months and 1 week.....250 days due to an injury. Not once did the word "quit" or "give up" ever come into his vocabulary. During his extended stay on base, I was fortunate enough to become involved with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. That kept me busy until Christmas. After that, I became very involved with supporting families that had their sons and daughters drop to MRP (medical rehabilitation platoon). While writing to my son EVERY night while he was gone, I would write to injured or sick Recruits to help keep them motivated and send words of encouragement. Both of these have now become my passions! I love to volunteer and help when I can.
I joined Marine Parents platoon page as soon as my son left. While he was in medical, I started doing research and found Marine Parents has so much more to offer other than just the platoon page. That encouraged me to join as many as I could and learn as much as I could about The Marine Corps and how I can support our Marine family members in need.
I have developed some very close relationships with other Marine families and MoMs. I was asked by a fellow MoM if I would do the marathon and I laughed at her. No way am I a runner, not even close. There is nothing about running that I enjoy. But I got to thinking, if my son could keep training on a broken leg for 12 days, knowing it was broken, and then endure 5 1/2 months of mental torture, then I can do this for him, and all of his brothers and sisters.
I am honored to be a MoM to one, and soon to be to two. My daughter is enlisting in October!! Being a single mother, these two have brought me so much joy and make me so proud. OOHRAH!!! God bless America, God bless you all and God bless our troops!
