Diane Puterbaugh
Diane will be participating in the following for 2022:
43rd Marine Corps Marathon
Date: October 28, 2018
Location: Washington DC
The morning of Oct. 28, 2018 you will find me at the start of the 43rd Marine Corps. Marathon. I will probably be near the 6 hour corral, or if I am feeling particularly frisky, the 51/2 hour corral.
For the first 3 miles I will breathe in the colors, energy and hopes of all the runners panting through the rolling hills. Remember to look up, the undulating ribbon of runners on those three hills, with their training plans put into action, is incredibly inspiring.
At all the water stops I smile as a so humbling young and goofy Marine holds out a water cup and says, "keep going."
Around mile 12, The Blue Mile, I will be walking, not running, because it is really hard to cry and run.
Throughout the rest of the course, feeling like a tired, teeny, middle aged speck among thousands of runners, I start looking for female Marines. Less than 10% of the Marine Corps. are female. They are truly the few and the proud. Although my daughter is serving so very many time zones away, I am thinking of her. Thank you to all who serve in the USMC, but just for that moment, when I cross the finish line, thank you to my daughter, LCpl Anne Puterbaugh.
