Event: Molly's Miles, C.O.P.S. held 04/30/2022
Sponsored in Columbia, MO

I participated in this event first because it was local, and I could without traveling and a lot of costs. But when I saw the reasons for the run, honoring police officers who had died in the line of duty, it made it all the more meaningful. As the mother of a Marine and founder of MarineParents.com, I know how important it is to keep those memories alive and to remember their service.

This is the first-ever "live" event that I have participated in with other people. My only experience with live events has been as a spectator for many years at the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. That in itself was challenging for me; I'm used to just getting up and walking out my front door and returning home 4-6 miles later. I "walked" for fitness the first time ever in September of 2021 after having lost 55 pounds from January 2021 to September. I've now lost 93 pounds in 14 months. A lot of that has been a direct result of being involved with Team Marine Parents, our virtual runs, and being committed to taking care of myself.

I came in LAST. Literally, I was the last person to cross the finish line. And I feel extremely proud of myself. And I would absolutely do this again. It's an incredible feeling to cross a finish line. It doesn't matter that I came in last, it felt amazing. I had taken a wrong turn somewhere along the route because they had removed all the directional signs by the time I got there, but another walker, 69-year-old Jo from Lamar, MO pointed me in the right direction. She then stayed at the finish line waiting for me and came back and held my hand up high with hers while we crossed together. Truly an incredible feeling.

After taking the wrong turn, I actually walked a little more than 6.5 miles so my actual pace was 15'47" per mile; my first mile was my fastest ever pace at 14'11". It was a day to shine and be proud!
