Walk, hike & Pilates : 10.5 miles in 3:15:04

3/19/2021
I originally began this challenge to honor my daughter who was in bootcamp. It was supposed to be just 3 miles and only Pilates. As time moved on I was inspired to do 10.5 miles and add the hike mostly incline. In the end I “ran” to honor all of my friends who have served the greatest country on planet earth. You are my forever heroes! Semper Fi! 🇺🇸

Treadmill walk: 5K in 48:09:00

My son joined the Marine Corps in January 2021! In support of him & other Marines, I have committed to supporting Marine Parents through the virtual runs/walks.

In January, we were visiting our Marine on the weekend of the Hero Run. My husband, son & I did a 5-mile hike together. Last month for the Veterans Run, I did a 5k treadmill walk. I look forward to the weather getting warmer in Michigan so I can participate outside! I have missed the deadlines to post my previous details & picture from January.

I went a shorter distance this time in hopes to improve my mile pace. I was able to achieve that so now I will work toward increasing the distance while maintaining a similar or faster pace.

Whether it's my wife, my mom, or my sister, I have been lucky enough to be around very strong women throughout my life. So it was an honor to participate in this event to celebrate Women's History Month.

It ended up being a great run! I run a lot these days for a brother-in-law who is learning to walk again after falling out of a tree last July &, among other things, shattered his pelvis. He has always been an active guy & he’s working hard to get back to being able to be active!

When my son was in boot camp I met some amazing MoM's. We created the Kilo Company MoM platoon. Although our son's are now serving in different aspects of the Marine corps, we still communicate daily. I don't know if I could have done those long 13 weeks without their support. I dedicated my run to these strong, beautiful MoM's! Stay savage Kilo MoM's.

This was my first run of the new season and I was not ready but it gave me major motivation for the rest of the season! With all of the uncertainty in the world right now it felt great to do something meaningful for our Marines!

My husband has wanted to join the military since we first started dating 9 years ago! Now, he’s a recruit at MCRD SD! I’ll see him in 12 weeks for graduation! I just wanted to support him any way I could from home, so I gave this virtual event a try! I’ve never ran this fast in my life! It was fun to challenge myself and I can’t wait to try the next one!

I usually walk these events together with my Poole/RCT/Marine moms in TN. We call ourselves ’USMC Moms of TN’. Support from other moms was so wonderful when my son went through Boot Camp in July-Oct 2020. I wanted to offer this same support to other moms, so we are now partnering together with my son’s Recruiting Officer and getting the support out there, here in Mid TN. The bond between MoMs is like no other. Our sons and daughters have made us sisters. 🖤

Mendy Quinn

Walk: 1 Mile in 22:09:00

3/17/2022
Mendy is a special-needs adult who has worked at Marine Parents two hours a day since 2010. She started out volunteering and when she lost her job as a janitor at Walmart in 2011, we hired her part-time to do some work with us. Her birthday is about the same time as the Rosie the Riveter run. The staff in the building walked a mile with Mendy and she got her first-ever medal. She couldn't have been more proud and it was a great birthday for her! We love you Mendy and so glad we got to walk this mile with you!

So my owner took me out for a walk and it took a really long time because there were all kinds of things to smell along the way. I have short legs. Don't judge me. She kept telling me "WE CAN DO IT" and indeed, I did it! I was all-in for women on this walk! A huge shout out to all the Rosies, 16 million working women during WWII, for their tenacity and spirit!

I got to do this 10k with my 13 year-old grandson, Ethan, who is also on Team Marine Parents. I think this was his 22nd medal and he's very proud of that! He's also on his school's track team now. I couldn't be more proud!

We started the walk out with my telling Ethan who Rosie the Riveter is; of course it was hard for him to fathom that women didn't work outside the home. But he immediately understood the example every Rosie set for women in the future. He agreed, Rosies are heroes. We talked about how World War II impacted everyone and he talked about the war in Ukraine. Then we talked about his Uncle, my son, who was in the Iraq war, and his Grandpa, my father, who was in the Vietnam war. I'm impressed with how much he knows and how much he cares.

To go from not being able to walk to the end of my culdesac a year ago to spending two hours walking with my Grandson and completing 6.2 miles and listening to him tell me about school and friends...well, it just doesn't get any better than that. Ethan talks...a lot...and I'm so grateful for that. This is probably my 10th time doing a 10k in under a year now. And this was the best 10K experience I've had to date.

He and I and his mom and many others from the office will be walking every Marine Parents VR event this year and many Marine Corps events including the Marathon in October...it will be both my first, and Ethan's first. Ethan was a baby in a stroller when we were looking for new office space for Marine Parents. He's grown up with Marine Parents. And he was born to run. But once in a while, he'll slow down to walk with his Grandma. I couldn't be more blessed.
