I'm showing support for the Marine Corps and our son actively serving. May we all be inspired to serve our country in small ways.

When I signed up for the Semper Gumby Virtual Run, I planned to run either a 10k or 10-miles. But then, an opportunity to run a Half Marathon the same weekend came up and I did it! So, I changed things up for this race and did a 5-mile walk/run instead... Semper Gumby! I want to thank Team Marine Parents for being my motivation for both races this weekend!

I was running and pushing myself out of my comfort zone for my Recruit! He chose to serve our country and is being pushed out of his comfort zone regularly, so we did the same to honor him!

Mission Complete! Semper Gumby 10k Virtual Run was a complete success!

I want to share a little bit about this journey. In Nov 2019 I was in a car accident, after which, I was told to run no more than 3 miles a day. The last time I ran any significant distance was 3 miles on 12/21/21.

When our recruit left in August, our family launched 85 to Thrive, a group to share our journey. Rather than just survive this experience, we wanted to show our support for our recruit by pledging to improve ourselves, just as he is doing.

When I first decided to sign up for the Semper Gumby Virtual Run, my thought was to complete a 5k. But the more I thought about it, I wanted to push myself to do more than I was comfortable with - because that’s exactly what my recruit is doing. He is pushing past his comfort zone, digging deep, and growing. He’s thriving!

With my best friend and boyfriend at my side, we completed our 10k today! We also raised $600 in less than 2 weeks - for which I am forever grateful. To those who graciously gave to this meaningful event and showed support for Luken, Leigh Bustrin Vandenberg, Carrie Haskell, Nick Dirig, Valerie Oxhorn, John Leniz, Dawn Ralston, Nicole Sarafolean, Seema Donahoe, and my mom, Debbie Cusick Yturbide . . . thank you! Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.

I completed my walk a day late because -well, you know, Semper Gumby. My son is a Marine and was recently home on leave for a month after 500 days of not being home. I dedicated my walk to him and all his brothers and sisters that have to go long periods without seeing their families. 💜

“Always Flexible” is something I strive for but with which I still struggle. This run was a good reminder, though, as it involved changing my route when a red racer snake stopped me in my tracks! 😳 My son has learned this concept quickly since he became a Marine, and I am very proud of him! I am honored to be a part of this organization!

My daughter is a recruit at MCRD Parris Island. I was a long-distance runner but had stopped when my mother, who has dementia, moved in so I could care for her 24/7. This event was to help a great cause and jump-start my running again! This is the first of many runs! #sempergumby

We have participated in a few of the virtual activities this year. This virtual event has probably been our favorite because we can genuinely relate to Semper Gumby. He has taught us to be flexible in all things life. We even got the shirts! 😊

Hike: 13 miles in 10:40:00

8/28/2022
Hiking has always been my place of refuge, and boy, did I need it this week! I pushed faster and higher than I had been in months. I even added a hill that I didn’t need to do to complete this “race” it was just because it was in front of me, so I did it! If my recruit can do hard things, so can I! Challenge accepted.

I ran this event because this year has really been a Semper Gumby year for us! Having been active all my life, kidney failure was the last thing I expected! With a deployment, a teenager, and all the medical stuff, I feel like I've been jumping Semper Gumby's hurdles all year! I wouldn't have made it without the love, support, and encouragement from my MarineParents family and my Marine! I did this event to prove that no matter what Semper Gumby throws my way, I'll cross the finish line and have a smile on my face!

My nephew joined the Marine Corps right out of high school. The Marines have turned him into a very respectful young man. His mom (my sister) misses having him close to home, but she puts him in God's loving hands. My sister and I do this virtual run/walk together virtually as we live on opposite sides of the state. We tried yesterday, but I had storm interference. Miles or states apart, our family is together.

2022 is my third year walking with Semper Gumby for our August Virtual Run. He's always by my side, reminding me that plans don't always shake out the way you expect them and to be always flexible! Staying flexible has never been more true than in the last couple of years of my life as the founder and director of Marine Parents. COVID took us for a ride, but with the help of donations from our supporters and Semper Gumby, we're getting through it.

I've been walking distances of 5-10K for only a year now, having gone from not being able to walk to the end of my cul-de-sac and barely getting in a mile the two previous years for Semper Gumby to walking 15-16 minute miles and anywhere from 3-5 miles a day, 5-7 days a week. It feels great to be getting healthy again, and I have the camaraderie of Team Marine Parents (TMP) to thank!

Thank you to all the folks who continue to support Marine Parents with their donations, love, and trust! Our 100+ volunteers and now minimal Marine Parents staff appreciate you keeping the critical outreach programs of Marine Parents!

Semper Gumby and Semper Family!

This run held up to its name: SEMPER GUMBY! I had some cramping in the first 3 miles. Then realized I'd forgotten to put body glide in an important spot & had to circle back home. Then needed a bathroom, but luckily there was a gas station nearby! The positive thing was the blister I was nursing didn't bother me!😁

I chose to walk as I haven't run in a few years, figuring if my son can endure boot camp I can walk 3.1 miles for him. It was a very humid Iowa day to be walking but we completed our time. My 7-year-old even walked with my mom (who also registered) and me.

The number 13. To some 13 is a lucky number. To me, it means a whole lot more. When my son enlisted we had a month and a half before he left. Then we had a couple of weeks, then it was just days. It was exactly 13 days from the day he enlisted to the day he actually left. We learned what Semper Gumby was really quick: always flexible. There are 13 weeks in boot camp. Today he is hiking 13k with a full backpack. What better way to so show support to him and to all of his platoon than running the Semper Gumby virtual run and setting a goal of 13 miles in 45 minutes?
